The island of Bali is one of the thousands that make up the Indonesian Archipelago. Yet, unlike the other islands, Bali has captured the hearts, minds, and imaginations of global travelers for many decades. The allure and fascination of Bali are clear and immediate. The island is physically beautiful, and its people are graceful, friendly, and exude a quiet confidence.
To the Balinese, their island is their entire world. Other worlds may exist beyond, but theirs is complete and whole in itself, a total provider bountiful with all the physical and spiritual attributes important to existence. In fact, the Balinese cosmos is so rich that the psychic, unseen world constantly spills over into the mundane. Daily life is a vibrant expression of the need to honor, praise, and propitiate the gods, nymphs, demons, and witches. Hardly a day goes by without a procession or temple festival taking place. To an outsider, Balinese life seems to be a continuous celebration with brief intervals for rest.
Bali, according to its most striking qualities as seen by outsiders, has been known as ‘The Island of a Thousand Gods,’ ‘The Last Paradise,’ or ‘The Island of a Thousand Dancers.’ Some view the island as perhaps the last frontier, waiting to be discovered for its beauty, its culture, and its ritualistic way of life. Bali has often been called ‘The Land of Many Temples.’ Temples, from small shrines in the rice fields to magnificent complexes belonging to large towns, are certainly the most important institutions on the island and can be seen everywhere. By the sea, on desolate promontories, in caves, on the highest mountains, even entangled in the roots of Banyan trees, large and small temples appear as a natural complement to the island’s geography.
Discover Ubud, a sanctuary of culture an hour’s drive north of Bali’s capital, Denpasar. Celebrated as the ‘Best City in Asia’ by Condé Nast Traveler’s Reader’s Choice Awards in 2009, Ubud offers a timeless escape where culture, spirituality, and creativity converge. This enchanting town has drawn artists and seekers from around the world for decades, enchanted by its artistic heritage and vibrant cultural tapestry.
Nestled among idyllic rice terraces, Ubud is a living canvas of traditional Balinese life. Its cooler climes, courtesy of the gentle breezes from the surrounding fields, offer a refreshing retreat from the warmer coastal areas. The rhythmic melodies of gamelan music fill the air, enhancing the sense of peace and serenity that permeates this village.
As the culinary heart of Bali, Ubud boasts an array of world-class dining options, cozy cafés, and local warungs, satisfying the palates of food enthusiasts. The town is also dotted with an eclectic mix of spas, galleries, and historical sites, including the central palace, which faces the bustling town market and hosts nightly traditional dance performances. Here, the spiritual essence of Hindu Balinese ceremonies is not just observed but experienced, with frequent celebrations that welcome participation.
Surrounding villages are treasure troves of craftsmanship, where you can explore and appreciate local arts such as weaving, woodcarving, and shadow puppetry. In Ubud, every path leads to discovery, inviting you to immerse in its culture, indulge in its offerings, and create memories that will linger long after your journey ends.
DISTANCE FROM THE RIDGE: 10 minutes
Here is some essential information to ensure that your holiday in Bali is both enjoyable and safe.
1. Avoid the hot midday sun, wear a hat, and drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration. When riding a bicycle or motorbike during the day, apply sunblock to your arms and neck.
2. To drive or ride a motorbike in Bali, an international license is required. It’s advisable to rent a car with full insurance. Remember, traffic moves on the left side of the road. While driving conditions may improve in the countryside, we recommend hiring a driver for convenience and safety.
3. Attending Ceremonies (Religious Guidelines):
• Wear a sarong and sash.
• Do not walk in front of those who are praying.
• Avoid using a flash camera or pointing your camera at the priest’s face.
• Never sit higher than the priest or the offerings. At cremations, be respectful and do not obstruct the attendees.
• Women should not enter temples during their menstrual cycle.
• Small donations are appreciated when attending special ceremonies or anniversary celebrations as a guest.
4. Dangerous Sports:
Ensure you have personal or travel insurance that covers any accidents. Be sure to understand what activities are covered.
5. Be vigilant when exchanging money:
Verify the exchange rate and any commission fees. Most importantly, always count your money before leaving, and consider using your own calculator.
6. The tap water in the hotel is not potable.
We provide bottled mineral water in your room, which we recommend for drinking and brushing your teeth.
Additional Suggestions:
• Respect Local Customs:
Engage with local customs and traditions respectfully and try to learn a few basic phrases in Bahasa Indonesia.
• Environmental Consciousness:
Be mindful of your environmental impact and dispose of waste responsibly, especially when visiting Bali’s beaches and natural attractions.
• Health Precautions: Be aware of any health advisories and ensure you have the necessary vaccinations before traveling.
• Cultural Sensitivity: Dress modestly when not at the beach and especially when visiting temples and other sacred sites.
Adding these points ensures that guests are not only informed about practicalities but also reminded to engage with Bali’s culture and environment respectfully, ensuring a harmonious visit.
